AT&T Fiber Self-Install: What to Expect

Not every AT&T Fiber order needs a technician visit. If your home already has an active fiber connection point, self-installing your gateway can take well under an hour. But for a brand-new fiber hookup, professional installation is usually part of the process, since AT&T has to physically run fiber cable to your home first. Here’s what actually happens in each scenario.

Self-Install vs. Professional Install: Which One Applies to You?

AT&T offers two paths, and which one you get depends on whether fiber is already active at your address:

  • Brand-new fiber connection. If your home has never had AT&T Fiber before, a technician visit is typically required. AT&T’s own installation guidance says fiber installs generally take about four to six hours, since new cabling and an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) need to be installed — even if you already have other AT&T services.
  • Existing fiber wiring or a gateway swap. If your home already has a working ONT (for example, you’re a returning customer, moving within a fiber-served building, or just replacing your gateway), self-installation is usually available and just involves connecting the new equipment yourself.

What’s in the Self-Install Kit

  • AT&T Wi-Fi gateway (BGW320 or similar All-Fi Hub)
  • Red ONT Ethernet cable (connects the gateway to your existing fiber service box)
  • Yellow Ethernet cable (for a wired connection to a computer or device)
  • Black power cord
  • Gray phone cable, if you have AT&T digital home phone service
  • Printed instruction guide

The Self-Install Process, Step by Step

  1. Connect the ONT to your gateway. Plug the red ONT Ethernet cable from your existing fiber service box into the ONT port on your new gateway.
  2. Power everything on. Plug in the gateway and give it about 10 minutes to boot. The Broadband and Service lights should turn solid green when it’s ready.
  3. Connect to Wi-Fi. Find your network name (SSID) and 12-character password on the sticker on the gateway itself, then connect your device.
  4. Register online. Your browser should prompt you to complete registration automatically; if not, go to att.com/Uverse.
  5. Customize with the app. Download the AT&T Smart Home Manager app to rename your network, set a new password, and manage connected devices.

Once the gateway is powered up and registered, the whole process typically takes well under an hour for most households.

If Self-Install Doesn’t Work

Sometimes the gateway’s Broadband or Service light won’t turn solid green. Before assuming something is broken:

  • Confirm you’re installing on or after 2 p.m. on your service activation date — installing earlier can cause failures even with a perfect setup.
  • Double-check every cable is fully seated in the correct color-coded port.
  • Unplug the gateway’s power cord for 15 seconds, then plug it back in and allow up to two minutes to reboot.

If it still won’t connect, AT&T technical support can troubleshoot remotely, and if that doesn’t resolve it, they can schedule a professional technician visit at no penalty to you for having tried self-install first.

Is Professional Installation Ever Required?

Yes — for most first-time fiber customers, it’s the norm rather than the exception. A technician needs to run and terminate the fiber line to your home and install the ONT, which isn’t something a customer can do themselves. Once that physical connection exists, future equipment swaps or reconnects are much more likely to qualify for self-install.
